In 2017 Polish drivers cause more accidents in EU

Dodano: 2018-06-12

In 2017 the number of car accidents caused by Polish drives abroad rose. Last year there were 65k of these cases, the most in Germany. Also more Poles drive uninsured cars in EU countries.

In 2017 Poles caused 65.2k collisions and accidents outside Poland. In 2016 there were noticed 64.9k of these incidents. The numbers of car accidents caused by Poles in particular countries were:

  • Germany: 32.6k,
  • Great Britain: 4.8k,
  • France: 4.5k,
  • Italy: 4.4k.

“Poles think that they are unpunished abroad. But the reality is different. Punishments are imposed ruthlessly and are higher than in Poland. Also amounts of compensation and benefits for injured people are higher. In 2017 the average value of car damage was PLN 18.1k, 11% more than in 2016. As a consequence it causes higher costs for the Polish insurance market and other drives who buy MTPL policies. In 2017 this cost amounted to PLN 1.2b”, explained Mariusz Wichrowski, the CEO of the Polish Motor Insurers` Bureau.

In 2017 the growth of car accidents caused by Poles who drive in EU countries without a valid MTPL policy, was noticed. There were 415 new incidents. It is 12.5% more than in 2016. The bureau’s cost on account of this was PLN 12m in 2017. A year before it was PLN 9.4m.
